our history
Originally conceptualised in 2009 by founder Sanelisiwe Shembe, Kuyameka Foundation (meaning “You can stand” in Zulu) is the culmination of years of personal, private and public philanthropic and community development work by Sanelisiwe. Whether through her private initiatives with orphaned children in her community or participating and volunteering in various community development projects the vision had always been gaining enough philanthropic experience to one day develop her own organisation.
Currently, the organisation is playing a very crucial role in supporting the government’s, NGOs’ and other private donors in their efforts to assist disadvantaged and impoverished communities around rural and semi-rural KwaZulu-Natal with food security, nutrition and hygiene during the COVID-19 pandemic.
